Chalfont St. Giles Junior School

June 2007

We are now fully into the swing of things for the final half term and at such a busy time of year for staff and pupils it seems appropriate to update you all on the news and forthcoming events at the school this term.

MUSIC AND ARTS
Many of you were lucky enough to be present at the fabulous evening of performances and a huge thank you must go out to Mrs Whiteley and Miss Breakell for putting together such a great show. The range, diversity and quality of the acts was superb and with nearly half the school performing on the night it was living proof of the many talents that exist within our school. Well done to all those children who took part and we look forward to even greater things next year.

SPONSORED WALK
Another favourite in the calendar was the sponsored walk and once again the effort and spirit amongst the children was high and we now await the collected sponsor money before we can let you all know a final total. The fun, costumes and determination of some of those who did 30+ laps (equivalent to 10 miles) all helped make the day a special one and who knows we may even beat last year’s total of over £5000! Please ensure any outstanding money comes in before the end of next week.

A big thank you also to the PA and all the volunteer marshals who helped the morning run so smoothly and the office staff who dealt with the huge amount of admin so efficiently before and after the event.

SPORTS DAY
A reminder that Sports day is fast approaching on Friday 29th June starting at 1.15pm. The usual mix of traditional races and less orthodox team relays will be taking place to see which team (if any) can wrestle the shield away from Palliser who won it in such a nail biting fashion last year. Parents and guests are invited to join us for the afternoon so why not dust off those picnic rugs and chairs and come along and cheer on your children on what we hope will be a great afternoon of sporting endeavour and team spirit.

YEAR 6 RETURN
Year 6 enjoyed a great week in France last week, as did those who stayed behind for a French flavoured week in school, and my thanks go out to Mrs Johnson, Mrs Whiteley, Miss Waite, Mrs Riordan and Mrs Barratt who accompanied the children and kept them safe and entertained all week. Details about next year’s trip for Year 6 should be coming home before the end of term.

INDUCTION DAY
A reminder to all parents that Tuesday 3rd July is County Transfer Day when all Year 2 and Year 6 pupils spend a day at their new schools.

At Chalfont St Giles we also use this as an opportunity for all our children in Years 3 to 5 to spend a day in their new year group with their new teachers and I am pleased to inform you that all the teachers who will be here in September will be present in school on the 3rd for this to happen. Class lists are already being formulated and children will find out on the morning which class they are moving into.

Please remember that a great deal of thought and time goes into this process and that whilst friendship groups may be considered they are not at the top of our list of priorities when creating two equitable classes within each year group. Please support the professional decisions made by the teachers and myself with regard to your child’s new class and teacher.

OPEN EVENING
In addition to the Induction Day, Tuesday 3rd July will also see a new Open Evening to parents. During the period 7.00-8.30pm parents will be able to come into school to look at some of the work the children have been doing in their child’s classroom hosted by the class teacher and hopefully some of the pupils. In addition there will be opportunities to look around some of the shared work areas of the school, the PA will be serving refreshments (and no doubt recruiting!) and there will be Governors available for parents to talk to. We hope this new venture will help open up the school to parents who don’t see us on a regular day to day basis and increase your knowledge of the fantastic work that goes on in our school. All parents are welcome so please take the opportunity to see what it is your child is engaged in at school.

KOSMIC KREW
Our friends from M&M Productions are back once again on 25th June with a follow up to last years Summer show and we will be asking for a donation of £2.00 per pupil toward the cost of having such a professional and entertaining performance. Letters will be coming home later this week so keep a look out for them in your child’s bag!!

REPORTS
A reminder to all parents that your child’s annual report will be coming home on Friday 6th July. It will contain an overall summary of progress, subjects reports from the teachers who teach your child and levels achieved in end of year tests. Please take the time to respond through the parent reply slip as your feedback helps us to improve the reports as well as acknowledging the many hours the teachers spend during the Summer term writing them.
